Topic:
Wireless Technology and Applications
Class Plan:

In this class we cover basic elements of wireless technology and its applications.

Required Reading:
Navigating the Alphabet Soup: Wireless Technology and Applications Primer (Stanford Note).
Study Questions:
  1. From a content provider's perspective, what are the key differences between the wireline and wireless Internet?
  2. With your study group, design a wireless Internet and GPS-based location service that will allow the managers of vehicle fleets to monitor and manage their fleets remotely over the Internet. Fleet managers will log on to a Website, track the movement of vehicles in their fleets and communicate with the drivers via two-way messaging. The service will use a hardware device that will be installed in each vehicle, and it will receive signals transmitted from GPS satellites to determine the vehicle's location.
    1. From a fleet manager's perspective, what are some applications of the technology?
    2. How will the service work? Think about how the different types of data will flow in the system. Summarize your thinking using a diagram.
    3. How will the system support the applications you want to provide to fleet managers?
