Class 4

Topic:
Enterprise Systems and System Implementation
Class Plan:

In this class we focus on enterprise systems.  These systems are important as they form the backbone of many large enterprises.  We will learn the subject by looking at a Web-based case that describes the implementation of an SAP R/3 ERP system at Hewlett Packard.

Required Readings:
  • ERP Overview (Stanford Note).
  • HP NADO CASE. This is an interactive Web-based case. You should go through Part I of the case ("The Pilot") and prepare for class discussion the study questions listed below. To see the video content, choose "web" as the "Movie source" at the right-hand top of the screen.

After completing the case (or after class), you may want to review Part II of the case, “The Rollins,” that tells you what happened in the five years that followed.

Study Questions:
    1. What are the different ways one can implement a large-scale Enterprise system? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?
    2. What are the key characteristics of the HP NADO project approach?
    3. In what ways can HP expect to get value from its ERP platform?
    4. What are the difficulties HP NADO is likely to encounter following a successful pilot?
